"Loss of synchronization" first thing every morning

Strange problem just started on Friday with our office netgear DG834 on BT
16meg broadband: loss of sync first thing in the morning every day. Never
happened before. (Times in GMT)

Fri, 2010-06-04 06:32:29 - LCP down.
Fri, 2010-06-04 06:32:36 - Initialize LCP.
Fri, 2010-06-04 06:32:36 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Fri, 2010-06-04 06:32:37 - CHAP authentication success
Fri, 2010-06-04 06:32:49 - Loss of synchronization :1
....
Sat, 2010-06-05 08:07:19 - Loss of synchronization :2
....
Sun, 2010-06-06 06:11:45 - Loss of synchronization :3
Sun, 2010-06-06 06:11:58 - LCP down.
Sun, 2010-06-06 06:12:04 - Initialize LCP.
Sun, 2010-06-06 06:12:04 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sun, 2010-06-06 06:12:05 - CHAP authentication success
....
Mon, 2010-06-07 07:19:15 - Loss of synchronization :4
Mon, 2010-06-07 07:19:26 - LCP down.
Mon, 2010-06-07 07:19:32 - Initialize LCP.
Mon, 2010-06-07 07:19:32 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Mon, 2010-06-07 07:19:33 - CHAP authentication success

Since it happened on Sat and Sun too it can't be errant staff unplugging
stuff etc. I wonder if it could be interference from somewhere (someone
starting up a badly supressed vehicle or equipment?) Any ideas?

The router has been on more or less continuously for 5 years with no
problems. Could it be time to change it?

I googled around a bit but the results were inconclusive, advice for other
repeated loss of sync issues ranging from replacing the router to getting
the line checked by BT, or changing the connection settings.

I would suggest running Routerstats for a few days and looking to see
what happens to the noise margins either side of the disconnect. That
might tell you more about what is going on.

Does the router reconnect at the same speed across the disconnects or
does the sync speed drop off?

I would go with Peter's suggestion that there is a noise source kicking
in at about the same time. I have one which I think is the lights in a
farm machinery workshop. My SNR drops every weekday morning between 7:25
and 7:40 when they come into work - later on a Saturday and only
occasionally on a Sunday. It goes back up again at 6-6:30 when they
knock off ( lunchtime on Saturday).

Ive seen similar events, usually accompanied by a change in my target
SNR. I assume that BT has some sort of timer mechanism that throws
people in ceertain exchanges off line while it resets margins, in what I
presume is an attempt to fine tune backhaul bandwidth to user demand.

Over the past year my target SNR has gone between 6dB and 12dB with no
apparent changes in line quality, several times.

So BT is probably rebooting DSlams on a regular or irregular basis, for
reasons they probably will not divulge. The giveaway is the regularity
with which it happens and te exact timing .

Actually I was meaning our own staff re. unplugging things (I've heard
tales of cleaners unplugging servers to plug a vacuum cleaner in...),
but since it happened at the weekend too it's unlikely (we don't have a
daily cleaner let alone a weekend one).

The fax machine is on the same phone line though, maybe I should try
swapping the microfilter in case there's some crosstalk, I suppose junk
faxes might arrive 7 days a week (seems unlikely cause though since no sync
loss at other times of day).
