Losing Static IP address

Good Day board,

Hope I can get a fix for this. I have a service that acts as my DC, DNS,
DHCP, Exchange server. Now when I enter a static IP address into the
NIC, during the course of the day if I should check back the properties
of the NIC, its set to dynamic. This also happens if I restart the
server, when it comes up it takes a very long time to give me the login
window and when I do log in and check the NIC properties, they are set
to dynamic. Needless to say all or most of the services fail until I
enter the static IP address and then restart the services.

Can anyone give me an idea why this is happening?

I would be tempted to say that you may have a problem with the NIC driver or
with the NIC itself. Do you use teamed adapters?

Hi Kirrin,

I do remember this happening before on some very rare occasions but I don't
remember any solution. Keep trying, maybe someone will remember what was
done with it.

No Marc, not using teaming, however, I do have another NIC in the
machine that I'm not using. I'm thinking of activating that NIC and
giving it the IP address of the current NIC and disabling that one and
see what happens. That however will require me to restart the server
which is not something to do on a whim. I will see if there is an update
for the NIC drivers and hope that will help.

Phillip, I sure hope you remember the solution. Check the backup tape of
your brain for those archived information

I don't think you will have to reboot. Just be sure to set the old Nic to
Automatic before you disable it. Forcebly do that yourself even though the
nic seems to be doing it on its own.

The drive needs cleaned and the tape media is decaying with age :-)

Maybe you could find something letting Google search the News groups.

but I didn't see anything specific.

Maybe trying differnt search parameters will help, like spelling "losing"
properly like I didn't do. After correcting that I still didn't see
anything conclusive, but there might be something buried in the results
somewhere.

I know that the tape starts to show signs of wear and tear and stress
after awhile. Thanks going at it now.
