Hi Guys/Gals,

I'm having a problem with one of our servers. It is a Server 2003 install
with Exchange on the box. Two NICS with the following setup
Ethernet adapter LAN 1:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-04-23-BF-D9-C4
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 130.102.23.215
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.128
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 130.102.23.158
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 130.102.2.15
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 130.102.5.110

Ethernet adapter LAN 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Marvell Yukon 88E8050 PCI-E ASF
Gigabit E
thernet Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-04-23-BF-D9-C5
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.30
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.1
130.102.2.15
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.2
Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 130.102.5.110

LAN1 our public address and LAN 2 our private.

Sporadically LAN1 is becoming unresponsive and shows up as follows:

Ethernet adapter LAN 1:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-04-23-BF-D9-C4

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 130.102.23.215

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 130.102.2.15
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 130.102.5.110

Ethernet adapter LAN 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Marvell Yukon 88E8050 PCI-E ASF
Gigabit E
thernet Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-04-23-BF-D9-C5
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.30
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.1
130.102.2.15
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.34.2
Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 130.102.5.110

The only difference that I can see being that the gateway entry is missing.
This obviously has an adverse effect on accessing Exchange externally.

Can anyone suggest a cause or a solution to this problem?

I get the error message

"Warning - Multiple default gateways are intended to provide redundancy to
a single network (such as an intranet or the Internet). They will not
function properly when the gateways are on two seprate, disjointed networks
(such as one on your intranet and one on the internet.) Do you want to save
this configuration?"

when network changes are made.

Any help is appreciated.

The default gateway on the private NIC should be blank. Only the public
NIC should have a default gateway setting.
