losing domain name resolution

Compaq Presario 2175us; WinXpProSp1; NS7.2; Dlink DI524 wireless router.

My internet connectivity is fine, but I keep losing domain name lookup.
If I type a url, I get the "name cannot be found" message. (I forget
the exact wording.) But if I type IP addresses into my web browser, I
can get to web pages.

The DNS server is assigned automatically by the router, and is, as
expected, 192.168.0.1. I also tried hard coding it to 192.168.0.1, but
this did not affect the situation.

The problem exists regardless of whether I am using wireless or ethernet.

Sometimes, rebooting will fix the problem. Sometimes not. Sometimes,
if the laptop just sits for a while, it mysteriously heal itself. The
problem is occurring two or three times a day. There are two other
laptops on the LAN, and neither are having any problems.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Interesting. I had a (work provided) laptop do exactly the same thing. It
had WinXP on it. They replaced the nic and it still did it, reinstalled the
OS and it still did it. Then they gave me another laptop and its worked
perfectly ever since (about 2 months now). I have no explanation.
It would boot and not get an IP at all or get an IP and be unable to open
any websites, let it sit for an hour and it might work ok for awhile. For
awhile, i could bypass my router and hook it directly to my Cable modem and
get it to work, but eventually even that stopped working. I'm 99% sure
its hardware related - but i have no idea exactly what hardware could cause
it seeing as how the nic was replaced. This was an IBM T42 laptop.
go figure.

Your laptop DNS server is correct, but obviously the router is not set
up correctly to acquire WAN DNS server addresses. Open the router and
set it up for Automatic IP and acquire DNS automatically.

Shut down the entire system - laptop, router, and modem - bring them
back up in the reverse order. See if this helps.
