I've got 2 computers in the house - need to take account that there
might be a third - and would like to network them so that the printer
and BT ADSL are accessible to all. I really don't know where to
start. Is there a basic FAQ or tutorial somewhere so that I can come
back and ask questions which might have a semblance of sense in them
and I would understand the answers. I am both computer and electronic
literate so I can cope with something reasonable intellegent.

Thanks

Rob

Rob,

I run a hard wired LAN at home and have recently <thanks Glen> extended this
with a wireless card.

Internet, files and printers are all shared and accessible from any machine.

It`s very very easy to do. If you are running WindowsXP on both machines, I
wouldn`t even bother with a FAQ - just plug and go really.

I think you should be able to set up a wireless lan for little more than 60
quid. If you go for 54g cards.

I thought setting up a hard wired LAN was easy, but WiFi is easier still!

Sorry I don`t have any www sites for you but I`m happy to offer any help on
here. Not that I`m an expert, just been there, done that etc...

You could do worse than talk to Glen at Tailored Systems in Newport also.

MJ

I've produced a site that details connectivity via NTL, tho' the theory
should apply to any type of connection:

<http://www.networklab.co.uk/cmodem/>

The difference is really the kit you use to connect via your provider.
As you will be going BT ADSL, then you get will a USB ADSL modem, which
you can then connect a gateway device to. Alternatively, you can replace
the modem with an ADSL modem/router. I use a Zyxel device such as this
to connect to my ADSL connection.

There is also a FAQ for this group, but I'm not sure where it's
currently held, sorry. You should also look at some of the guides at
<http://www.adslguide.org.uk> which are more adsl specific.
