I am looking for Microsoft Document that has reasons and explanations why
Enterprise Company should go with Domains and Active Directory vs.
Workgroups. If anyone knows where I can get that I would really appreciate.

Thanks,
R

Workgroups are (nearly) unmanageable after about 10
machines since there is no centralized User accounts
datebase, no central place to apply standarized policy
or to maintain and distribute software updates etc.

Also note that workstation licenses have 10 user limits
so after about 10 workstations you have to BUY the
server license anyway, and since you have a server the
DC costs you no more.

You can certainly find such articles at Microsoft, but
they will basically use a lot of words to say the above.

This is not to say it is impossible to manage 10 or even
100 workgroup machines but it is way to much work and
even 5 machines can be easier to deal with if you can
afford the server(s) to run the DCs.

I don't know of a MS document offhand but the reasons are pretty simple -
centralized management of users, groups, shares, Group Policy, and security
policy. Certain technologies such as use of ipsec using kerberos computer
authentication to secure network communications and resources and using
Certificate Services with autoenrollment are only available in a domain. The
only reason I can think of normally not to use a domain is to save the
expense of having domain controllers at which some point in the size of the
network it will become a cost saver in reduced labor overhead, not to
mention the value of increased security.--- Steve

More than a small handful of computers makes a workgroup very difficult to
administer. A domain gives you centralized admin/security - it's easier to
control where data is stored, etc. I don't like workgroups outside of home
networks or two, three computers in a small office. If you've bought a
Windows server OS, there's really no downside in installing it as a domain
controller, if you ask me.
