Hi

I have finally conviced me mar to get broadband,

i have had a look on adslguide but cant really see anything that makes sence
so thought i would ask the experts.

She just needs the cheapest, no frills package going.
She is not looking to be downloading a gig a day so a capped service is
fine.

i think even a 256 would be ok, but pref at least 512 just to get upto
speed.

anyone know of a good deal going at the moment, a modem to come with the
package is a nice to have but not required.

many thanks!

www.eclipse.net.uk have a free activation and modem deal available, no
limits and £17.99 a month for 512K. Don't mess about with some of the
others, get her set up with a reliable one which has decent UK based
support from the start.

http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?...entialservices

You might get the same elsewhere cheaper but go and look on ADSLGuide
for the horror stories that come with them. They do a capped product as
well but the unlimited Flex 500 product is a no-nonsense offering.

Bear in mind that BT charge ISPs a £50 or so connection fee, so usually
this gets passed on in some shape or form.

Offers that leap to mind are:

Pipex Solo 250 - uncapped, £15 a month, free setup if you stay a year
Eclipse Flex 500 - uncapped £18 a month, free setup if you stay a year
Freedom2Surf Connect Lite - £17.99 a month, 2GB cap, free setup if you
stay a year

Ultimately you get what you pay for and taking into account the setup
fee those prices look good IMHO.

cheers,
Paul

I was just having a look around actually - if price is a concern, just
get this:

http://www.ndo.com/lite-broadband.php

Looks like a really good value deal IMHO if she won't be caning the
connection.

cheers,
Paul

Although it seems like a "no contract" deal, they changed the T+C so
there's a cancellation fee within the first year if it proves to be
less than ideal. I'm using Plus.Net's Broadband Plus (14.99, no cap
and while Usenet and peer-to-peer file sharing is lower priority and
even hellishly slow, for browsing and e-mail the link is "up to" the
2000 kbps (they supply 500, 1000 or 2000 kbps, whatever the line can
support, so that's down to distance/line losses/etc). The activation
fee is deferred - they've some slightly crazy scheme of calling it a
free connection, but leave within the first year and one pays the full
40 +VAT, in the next year it drops by 20%, and so on (the maths would
have been easier if they had dropped from 5 years to 4 and charged at
40+VAT first year, 30+VAT second, 20+VAT in third and at end of 4th it
would be free. If your mum likes it, and gets her friends to sign up,
then each person who goes on will help reduce her bill, every month,
so if she has about 30 friends it would end up free for her, but if
it went down by just a fiver she'd probably be happy :-) Another one
which might be possible (depending on location) is the UK Online 9.99
a month (500 kbps) service which can be supplied only in a number of
areas where Easynet/UK Online has equipment installed at BT exchanges.

See <http://mywebpages.org/Easynet_2004_LLU.jpg> for a map, and list
of exchanges at <http://www.ukonline.net/broadband/exchangelist.php>

Hope she doesn't read/hear about the BBC "media player" and try it out,
as 1 GB won't go very far, IMHO. If it wasn't for the activation fee,
Metronet's PayGo Extra might be an alternative, for low to medium use.
