I am looking for an 802.11b AP that has no other features than just being an
AP. It seems that everything today is built with a router and I don't need
that. I already have my DSL router and it works great.

Suggestions, comments?

The Wireless routers can all be used as WAPs, ignoring the router part.
I added a Linksys BEFW11S4 V3 to an existing SMC wired router.
Disable the DHCP on the Linksys, assign an appropriate address to talk to
the WAP configuration, and cable the "uplink" port to your existing router.
You gain wireless, and a couple of wired switch ports.

So.... then one should NOT just buy an AP then?

I mean.... its just just as easy and more cost
effective to go ahead and spring for the wireless
router combo unit?

Bought a Linsys WRT54G for the same price as a Linksys access point in the
UK - I dont need most of the features on it - just the wireless

I also just acquired the Benq AP (model AWL-500 - cost around 110 euros
here).

It was dead easy to set up and get working.

I am wondering a little about the range, when used in conjunction with a
Benq card in a laptop. It reaches some parts of the house but not others,
and not the terrace where I hoped to sit and work. I'm wondering if it's
worth trying to add external antennas to the Benq WAP and/or card. Neither
has a visible socket and I've found very little information about the Benq
wireless equipment - it doesn't seem to be favoured by wireless enthusiasts.

Tony,

I use this site all the time to find out what's on sale:
http://www.salescircular.com/

If you are not in the States, then I don't know what to tell you.

Try www.freeantennas.com for cheap and easy to make antenna reflecters - see
http://www.freeantennas.com/projects...ate/index.html for an example

Tony

Ecost.com has an Adaptec 802.11b AP for $29.00 US. I don't own one, nor
know anything about them.

Here's the link:
