Cheap? www.ebay.com is probably the place. For some reason, in recent
years, quad-port ethernet cards seem to have become MORE expensive. Unless
my memory fails me (which is entirely possible), it seems that I used to buy
D-Link 570tx cards brand-new for about $120. In any event, ebay sometimes
has good deals on them. You can also look at the Adaptec cards.

All of that is irrelevant if you need quad-gigabit cards, in which case,
you're probably not going to find them cheap anywhere.

You can get a 4-port hub on a PCI card for about $15. The host will see
just one interface, not 4, and since it's a hub all of the downstream
bandwidth will be shared among the 4 ports, and traffic will be sniffable.
But this is probably just fine for home use. I've been using one for over
a year with no problem.

My card is an Asound AL500P. It uses an ADMtek AN983B chipset, which runs
with the Tulip driver. I got mine for about $13; I think it's been
discontinued but you can still find them online. If not, try searching for
"PCI hub".

Good luck,
Andrew.

I'm surprised nobody makes a PCI card that's equivalent to what every
cheap DSL/Cable router has. Basically, an Ethernet controller and a five or
six port single-chip 10/100 switch (such as the BCM5325). The switch does
vlan tagging, so you can separate the ports into whatever bridge groups you
need.

DS,

Incase if I plug this 4-port card onto Linux PC and wanted to make that
Linux PC like Router/Switch with VLAN (802.1Q) capability, then do I
have to enable bridge option in Linux kernel?., (similar to what
available in the Market from Linksys/D-link). I am trying for some info
on how can I make low end Router with VLAN capability. I am verymuch
interested to do something with Bridge.
