Hi all
I'm about 3.5k from the exchange on a 2Mb connection with aol. Line is
pretty stable at about 1.5Mb. Can i get software for my Netgear DG834G for
long lines and would it make any difference? Or might I be better with a
different router? Not expecting the earth but wondered if I could max my 2Mb
connection
present stats are

Connection 1952 kbps
Attenuation 43db
margin 6db

Thanks
Trev

A netgear dg834g is certainly among the best general routers, and pretty
stable on a long line. If you are only 3.5km from the exchange, and only
getting such a speed, then something else might be wrong. Have yout tried
connecting the router to the socket behind the faceplate on the master
socket (unscrew the two screws, pull out bottom half and you will see
another socket), this can have a *huge* impact, seriously, it can kick you
up from 512k to 8mb, depending how messed up your internal wiring is.

I live in a very rural area in Lincolnshire and in my experience I've found that the
Netgear DG834G is by far the best router for both a steady connection and the highest
sync rate.

I'm running the DG834 version 3 here, we're 4 miles from the village which houses the
exchange, so I'm assuming the line length is longer. The stats are:

Connection 2592 kbps,
Attenuation 56db,
Noise Margin 10db

It's been up for just under 113 hours

I'd stick with the Netgear.

As a matter of interest I tried the DG834N (the new Next N wireless one) on my line
for a test and the best sync I got out of that was about 1830 kbps, so it looks as if
the older model may sync better too. Dunno why though, no doubt others will be able
to expand on this.

I'm using a Draytek and found that a quality Zyxel filter at
the NTE5 improved sync rate and stability. The phone
extensions, CLI box, extra ringer, are off the phone leg.
For good measure I added the original cheapo filter
by plugging it into the phone jack of the Zyxel filter
so as to give two phone filters in series, on the basis
you can't have too much of a good thing.
No problems with phones or CLID unit.
Of course the ADSL goes straight through the Zyxel,
the filter chokes etc only filter and block the HF signals
from being shunted off by the phone side..
