Hi all, first time poster - some time reader. I have what
should be a fairly simple question yet am having trouble
finding an answer.

Is there any way to tell from a Win98SE client which BDC
was used for network authentication? Say, an environment
variable one can set or a registry value?

We're having some logon script issues and trying to track
them down now. I suspect a rogue BDC somewhere on the
network.
thanks in advance!
OG

I don't think this information is available under Win9x. A simple
way of making it visible would be to add this line to your domain
logon script:

echo set Domainname=YourDomain>c:\SetDomainname.bat

Later on you can execute c:\SetDomainname.bat in order to set
the %Domainname% environmental variable.

Since Windows 98 doesn't authenticate to a domain, it doesn't authenticate
to a domain controller either. It only confirms that an ID and password are
valid. You can easily determine this from a Windows NT, 2000 or XP client
however.

Add the following registry key to the Win9x workstation
and you will be presented with a message box during logon
indication what server you have authenticated to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon

Create a DWORD value = DomainLogonMessage
Set the data = 1
