What Ben was saying about DNS is to make sure that all internal machines
ONLY use the internal DNS and not any outside DNS. There are other factors
involved as well. As Ben mentioned, make sure the DCs are registered
properly in DNS. You can verify that by seeing if the SRV records exists. If
you see a zone called _msdcs.yourdomainName.com, which under it would have a
folder called "gc" with the IP address of your current GC. Under
yourdomainName.com zone, you will also find 3 yellow folders called, _udp,
_sites and _tcp, you should be alright. You will also find a grayed out (if
this is 2003 SBS) _msdcs folder, which is a delegation to the
_msdcs.yourdomainName.com zone.
As for the non-members, if you are trying to join them, the very first thing
that needs to be done is to change the DNS IP address in their IP properties
to ONLY use the internal DNS. Of course the internal DNS in this case is
your SBS server.
A misconfigured multihomed SBS can cause issues as well, as well as if the
domain name is a single label name and/or the Primary DNS Suffix of the
machine does not match the AD DNS domain name.
Pinging by name may be resolving based on NetBIOS, since you didn't state
how you are pinging. The Search Suffix has much to do with this.
If you are not sure of what I mean after that explanation, I would highly
suggest to post an unedited ipconfig /all of the SBS, of a working client
and of a machine you are trying to join. This will give us a good start.
