Login over VPN slow

We successfully migrated from NT 4.0 server to new
Small Business 2003 server (and new hardware)

We are trying to open remote office with two users and we
get about 512kbs through our hardware VPN connection
(Snapgear 570s at both ends, 768/768 T1 at one end,
1.5Mb/768k cable modem at the other.) All workstations
use XP Pro. However, login times from workstations are
excruciatingly slow. (approx 3 minutes before "applying
preferences" finishes.) Also, opening up a 20k word file
can take almost 15 seconds. Saving the same can take
about 45 seconds. Any ideas for speed improvement?
Configuration suggestions?

Can we use our old NT 4.0 server to authenticate (maybe a
backup Domain Controller) or perhaps to replicate or
synchronise data with our primary data share on the SBS?
We have one app that uses a shared database (ComputerEase)
and it opens quickly, but can take 5 minutes to save a
work order! That app needs to connnect directly to the
SBS, but other than that we can work with local data and
cross-backup with the SB Server at night if the setup is
right

I am open to any suggestions, but must get the speed issue
resolved.

make sure the VPN clients have correct DNS settings. Also, you may want to
setup site to site vpn.

Thanks for the reply

The hardware vpn router at the remote end has the SBS
listed as a DNS server, and the remote machines have the
router listed as the DNS server

The routers are supposed to link the two sites. They are
configured to route traffic between the private subnets
(is that what you mean by site to site VPN?)

Thank you for your suggestions. I welcome any more
comments, or additional details.

All your clients should point to the SBS server for DNS. In Active
Directory, clients find the logon server and other services through DNS. (In
NT, they used special Netbios names). Not having the correct DNS setting is
the most common cause of slow logins in AD.
