Hi,

We have a Server 2003 domain called mydomain.com

When we try to logon to the domain from a workstation, we have to use
"mydomain" instead of "mydomain.com"

Aren't we supposed to be using the dot com domain name? The mydomain is a
netbios name?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Where are you entering the domain name? You should be able to logon by
using (E-Mail Removed) . This will override any other domain name
specified elsewhere.

From the windows login screen you can log in through one of three ways:

1. (E-Mail Removed) (this grays out the domain selection drop-down box)

2. mydomain\myname (this grays out the domain selection drop-down box)

3. myname (requires that you select a domain from the domain selection
drop-down box).

We are using myname in the user box, and in the domain box mydomain.com
won't work, it has to be mydomain.

Is this correct? I would think the domain should be mydomain.com?

Thanks!

No. None of my domains have ever included the ".com" on the end when it comes
to that box. To the best of my knowledge, the ".com" is only necessary when
using the internet format of "(E-Mail Removed)".

Maybe we need some basic level here

Your Domain has 2 basic Identifiers.

1: Win2000 or newer use DNS names: <domain>.<something>.<somethingelse>.
2: Pre-Win2000 use NetBIOS (the thing you use to see all computers in the
subnet): DOMAIN

<domain> and DOMAIN do not have to be the same

You could call the Domain: "MyDomain.com" with the "MyNetbiosDomain" NetBIOS
name.
Keep in mind that NetBIOS only supports names up to 16 characters! (no dots)

The Logons look like this
----
Windows 2000 or newer:

Username = (E-Mail Removed)
Password = password
Domain = greyed out

Pre-Win2000:

Username = MyNetbiosDomain\MyName
Password = password
Domain = greyed out

Easy Use:

Username = MyName
Password = password
Domain = MyNetBiosDomain

---
mirco... would suggest some nice windows server 2003 literature for your
desk

Micro,

OK. Thanks. I'm familiar with that essentially, except I was under the
mistaken impression that the easy way required the domain name and not the
NetBIOS name in the domain field, when that was used. Had that one wrong. I
have the books, but I got lazy on this one. I'm an engineer, and I maintain
just the servers at our organization (so I know enough to be dangerous),
which are in a trusted domain setup between and old NT domain and our new
Server 2003 domain I set up, and we're changing the logins now from the old
NT domain to the new Server 2003 domain so we can dump the NT4 boxes. All
they do now is act as PDC/BDC.

Thanks,
