Hello, can someone pls explain why a pc which is configured to log to
domain controller logs in with no problems and it does not matter if th
domain controller is turned off logged off or anything it just logs i
with a username and password that was setup on the domain controller.

Also is it normal that when a DC which acts as a DHCP server continue
to act as a dhcp server and leases ip address even when the server i
logged off.

Thank yo

Hello aconti,

If the DC is shutdown, the clients use cached credentials, so it looks like
they are logging on to the domain but they don't, they work local on the
computer.

The DHCP service is running always if started, no need for being logged in
to the server.

Best regards

Hi there, if you DC is down then cached credentials will be used to login on
the client pc's. Only users who have logged on to a particular computer will
still be able to log on to that PC. Note that cached credentials can be
disabled by group policy so usernames and passwords do not get stored, this
is quite a good security measure.
With regards to DHCP, yes the service will run if the server is not logged
on. This is true of every Windows service (i think, i can't think of one that
requires logging in), DNS, Exchange, etc. There are however some 3rd party
programmes such as databases that require the server to be logged on for the
server side of the programme to run.
Hope that helps
James.
