Is there any way, without buying software (ie, scripts, freeware, etc)
to do a search for wireless device on my network and to find out which
access point they are connected to?

We have many access points across our network and the wireless devices
are contantly moving around (on fork lifts, etc). I would like to be
able to find out which access point they are connected to so I have a
general idea where a device physically is.

Thanks

Cory

from what I understand with the use of my own AP (Compaq WL410) you can with
the software that came with the unit, called "AP Manager".

However, your AP (unknown brand?) May not have this sofware available to it.

Check the manual, If its a "WaveLAN Network" (Orinoco?/Compaq, transparent
bridges)
you should be able to do this...

Have you tried a tracert to the remote device's IP address? At least that
should show the IP of the closest router.

Like Cory, I need to to evaluate (audit) the amount of wireless accesspoints
on our LAN

Next to finding out how many AP there are, with MAC adresses I need to find
them.

Are there any freeware tools to locate (singal strenght direction finders or
something) AP?

Regards, Ron
