Local printer access through RDP

I think I know how to properly ask this question now.

I am using RDP to access a Windows 2000 Server through a VPN from a remote
office with a local laser printer, Dell 1710n, connected to an XP Pro work
station.

I am unable to print documents from the server to the local printer even
though I have allowed access to local resources, disk drives and printer.
When I attempt to add the printer to the server I get an error message that
the printer can not be found.

There was an old inkjet printer, which I am told did print documents from
the server.

What steps do I need to take to verify the Windows XP Pro Work Station and
the Windows 2000 Server will allow printing to the printer connected to the
XP Pro Work Station while using RDP to access the Windows 2000 Server?

What Services do I need to verify are turned on? What Ports are required?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thanks,

Forgive my thick head.

I login as Administrator, on the server. However, when I attempted to
install the Printer to the Server I kept getting the error message that the
printer could not be found and then the server would not allow me to continue.

I have tried to install it as a "Local" and "Networked" printer with the
same results. That is why I got stumped. Could there be an issue with the
Server 2000?

Hi,

There is no need to "install" the printer on the server. Printer redirection
will install it automatically at logon time **IF** the appropriate driver is
installed or available for installation.

I suspect you get Event 1111 in the server System event log when you logon
through RDP from this computer. The Event will tell you which printer driver
you need to install on the server for the redirection to work.

Go to Dell website and download the driver for the 1710n for W2K Server and
install it from Printers | Server properties.
