Local network shares not accessible after VPN'ing

My XP clients cannot access local network shares after connecting to another
network via VPN.

I'm running Windows 2000 server and have 4 client PC's on a local network.
The server provides addresses via DHCP to the clients.

Two of the clients are XP; two are W2K.

If I VPN from XP to another network, I can no longer access the local
network shares on the W2K server.
However, if I VPN using the W2K clients, I can browse the local shares.

One of the XP clients is hardwired.
I add a wireless card to this client; tried different configurations
including assigning a fixed IP and still cannot browse the local shares when
it's connected to another network via VPN.

Computer browsing is set up on all machines.
I've disabled firewall filters on the one XP client.
Client policy is about as loose as it can get it.
I can even ping the W2K server from XP when VPN'ing.

How can I get the XP clients modeled on the W2K clients?

Also, does Vista overcome this problem?

I just purchased Vista, but not I'm not sure if I should install it if the
problem is going to worsen.

Thanks for your reply.

Fred

You may want to disable using default gateway in remote network. This search result may help,

1.Click on the "Start" button on the task bar and then choose "Control Panel" from the start menu.
2.Click on "Network and Internet Connections".
3.Click on "Create a connection to the network at your workplace".
4.Select "Virtual Private Network connection" and then click on "Next" button.
5.Enter "VPNING.com" in the Company Name and then click on "Next" button.
6.Choose the "" option and then click on "Next" button.
7.Now enter the VPN server address and then click on "Next" to continue.
8.If you want to add the VPN connection shortcut to your desktop, then check the appropriate check box and click on "Finish" button to complete the VPN connection Wizard.
9.Now is your VPNING configuration ready. You can start your VPN connection by double click on the "VPNING.com" icon on your desktop or in "Network and Internet Connections".
10.Enter your VPNING Account details - your email as username and password - to logon the VPNING.com.
11.Upon successful logon, a connection icon will be shown on the system tray.

Create a user with a password,After sharing go to Permission tab and allow only this user to read the folder. that way no other user account will be able to access it and you are protected.
