I have an office of 15 or so users. I have a windows 2k domain with 25
licences.
All workstations have two mapped drives to two different folders on the
win2k server.
One is for docs and one is data for a program they use.
They also have two laser printers served from that server.

I have been getting reports of printers not working and data not accessable
intermittenly. Reboots of the workstations usually clear it up. When trying
to open the mapped drives it says "local device name is already in use" if I
reboot this goes away.

The drive letters are not in use by anything else. What else could be
causing this error?

Ryan

I don't what the solution is but you are not alone - I have been
experiencing the same problems with XP SP2 workstations in a Win2003 server
domain.

Assuming you receive system error 85, this may help. quoted from
http://www.howtonetworking.com/systemerrors.htm

System error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use

Cause: net use /persistent:yes is default settings for NT and win2000/XP. If
you have mapped some network drives and check the reconnect at logon, or
your network uses logon script to map network drives, the mapped network
drives may show red Xs. If you enable echo and pause the logon script or if
using net use to map the same drive manually, you may get "System error 85
has occurred. The local device name is already in use." One thing you may
want to try is using net use /persistent:no, for example, net use i:
\\servername\folder /persistent:no.

I don't think this is the case. The mappings work most of the time but don't
intermittenly. Its not all the time. Something triggers this message then a
reboot clears it.

Any other ideas?
