Local Area Networking

I am attempting to network (wired) a computer running
Windows 98 and one running Windows XP. I briefly had them
networked and then for some reason the Windows 98 does not
see any computers on the network. I have tried resetting
all settings but obviously I am overlooking something.
The Windows XP unit sees the network but cannot access
shared programs because of the problem with the Windows 98
computer. Any assistance in solving this problem would be
appreciated.

All you need to do is set up IP adresses and gateways for both computers.
It might seems a bit complecated but it is easy.

File-setting-control panel-network
select the TCP/IP->(your network card name)
properties.
IP ADDRESS
specify IP address

Machine A: 192.168.0.1
NetMask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 0.0.0.0

Machine B: 192.168.0.2
NetMask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 0.0.0.0
Also make sure both machines are on the same work group to assure ease of
use. And note the computer names if you don't know the computer names
just goto my computer and where it says address type

"\\192.168.0.1" if your on machine B and "\\192.168.0.2" if your on
machine A

Let me know if this helps

RO,
Nutter gave you great advice, but I would recommend that you do not use the IP address of "192.168.0.1" for one of your PC's. You should leave that address free, if ever you decide to use a router or proxy software such as "WinGate", you will need this address for these items, so you will not need to change your settings in the future.

From the WinGate Website:
http://www.candc1.com/wingate/suppor....1%2C_why_.htm

So you might consider using:

Computer A: 192.168.0.2
Computer B: 192.168.0.3

These tips should help:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
