Local area connection icon in task bar

Hi
Windows ME does not show "local area connection icon " in the task bar ,as
Windows XP
Is there any free software ,that do such a thing in ME.

Uraks,

Win Me does not place a network icon in the systray when using a LAN, only
when using dial-up networking. If you want to monitor a network card
(NIC) then you will need to install a third party product such as DUMeter
(http://www.dumeter.com/) however that costs US$19.95 when I last checked.
There are also I understand some other free applications that will do the
same job.

Alternatively you could use Win Me's system monitor to monitor activity on
your NIC.

It doesnt serve my purpose.
I just want Something in the system try to show..
DSL network is connected /disconnected.
This if for windows ME

How are you making the DSL connection? If you are using a hardware device,
router or modem, which handles the PPPoE, you won't get a status window on
the task bar. Not even with Windows XP; I know, I have a friend with
Windows XP connecting through a router.

OTOH, when I first set up my DSL connection, I used Enternet 300 on my
Windows ME computer; I had a status icon on the task bar. I lost that when
I moved the connection to a NAT router, and dumped the Enternet 300
program.

If you are connecting through a PPPoE connection on a hardware device, DO
NOT try to install a software PPPoE manager on the computer. It won't work,
and it will cause problems with the hardware device.

That's not actually true. If the user has a UPnP enabled router and also
enabled UPnP in their operating systems then the router will show in the
notification area/systray as "Internet Gateway" and provide connection
status and throughput. To echo your words, "I know" but not because I
have a friend but because I have just such an icon in the notification
area as I'm typing. <g>

Really? It showed up shortly after I set up my router for UPnP, but then it
vanished, never to return, on my Windows ME computer. The same thing for my
friend with a router and Windows XP. In both cases, after initially
clicking on the icon in the taskbar, it closed, after presenting a popup
that it would be moved to the network properties folder on the Desktop.

I am using a hurricane 9000G with VPN & firewall ADSL modem
Router.connected to my Win XP.
MY wim ME is also connected to the modem router via RJ45 link.
My UPnP is ...DISABLED.....
I dont know why...the installer did all this for me..
Anyway what is this UPnP ..and its functions...

Hi Mike..
I have read the notes on UPnP and i understand it and the vulnerabilities
too.
I will activate UPnP in My modem and in my windows Me and see if there is a
notification in the system tray in the win me computer..when the network is
connected

UPnP = Universal Plug and Play. As for its functions, well I've given
above one example of its use in my previous post although there are many
others. Personally I don't think it works that well or reliably in Win Me
but it works with few if any problems in XP. For best use one requires a)
a UPnP enabled router, b) an attached PC with UPnP enabled and c) UPnP
enabled software. The software then opens and redirects the necessary
ports on the router. That you can also display an icon in the
notification area that provides information about the gateway is a bonus
for those who want to check their router throughput from their PC client.
