LMHOSTS problem after applying SP1

Hello,

Before I applied SP1 to my Windows Server 2003 system I had
disabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP for my client VPN connections
and used an LMHOSTS file. Everything worked smoothly. After
applying SP1 though, I can no longer access any of the remote
computers using their names (as defined in the LMHOSTS file).

If I put the extension #PRE after any entry in the LMHOSTS file,
it works, but before I applied SP1 it worked without the #PRE
extension. This is very strange.

Also, when I enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (with LMHOSTS lookup
disabled), I can access the remote PCs using their names, but
browsing folders becomes very slow.

Does anyone know why the LMHOSTS entries without the #PRE
extension are not loaded when searching for a remote PC by
name? It was working fine before SP1.

I am not a networking expert so I would appreciate any
help.

Thank you,
Paul

I ran ipconfig /all on a Win 2003 machine after applying SP1 and found that
the Node Type was listed as unknown. I know that several months ago the
node type was H, but I can't say for sure that the change was due to SP1.

In any event, run ipconfig /all and if your node type is unknown, edit the
registry:
