LLU mac codes

Here's a slight ramble with a couple of questions at the end.

I requested a MAC from PIPEX last week - they told me it was in the format
of LLU (yes I know what LLU means) and some new ISP's don't accept them.

Incidentally, originally my exchange wasn't LLU, but since PIPEX took over
Bulldog it now seems to be.

I was told on the phone from BeThere that they accept LLU MAC's, but I got
an email telling the MAC isn't valid.

So - do I have to cancel PIPEX, and wait for the line to be cleared to
setup BeThere?

If the MAC has not been accepted, does this mean my PIPEX service will not
be terminated?

My father got a MAC from Pipex last month, it started LYTH........, not
the traditional format for a BT Wholesale MAC code. However it was
accepted by his new ISP, and all went OK. His exchange is a small rural
one, so no LLU there. Are you sure it's an LLU one (Pipex will tell you
all sorts of nonsense). What does the samknows data say about your
connection ?

No, with Pipex your connection will be terminated 30 days after they
issued the MAC, regardless.

All MACs are now going to be in that format as the actual provisioning
process has moved over to OpenReach for all ADSL services rather than just
LLU ones.

You can check whether your line is really LLU via an availability checker
- ours indicates whether your line is LLU or not.

It certainly should not be. Issuing a MAC does not gurantee it will be
used and the migration process itself covers the cease.

The problem with Pipex as an old supplier is that they occassionally try
to grab the customer back via an LLU migration order and there is nothing
to block that - we had it happen to 2 users last month and it took BT
weeks to fix.

Here's the e-mail from Pipex detailing their policy:-

Quote:-

"Our door is still ajar...

We are sorry to hear that you are considering moving to another service
provider for your broadband. At this stage we should have already discussed
your migration request with you. If not, please give us a call so we can see
if there's anything we can do.

Once a Mac code has been issued, your Pipex Broadband will automatically be
ceased in 30 days. If you would like to change your mind and stay with
Pipex, please e-mail: (E-Mail Removed) within 25 days so we can keep your
Pipex Broadband service active.

Please find your MAC code below.

LYTH........./xxxxL

Cancellation Charges...
Please note, if your Pipex Broadband service is still within its first 12
months, contract cancellation charges may apply - see our terms and
conditions for details at: http://www.pipex.co.uk/legal

Any incentives that you may have previously taken on the basis of staying
with Pipex for another 12 months will also be charged back to you. These
charges will be processed within the next few days if applicable.

Pipex was one of the first UK ISPs and, for 13 years, has been an industry
leader associated with many awards and innovations. We plan to be around for
a long time yet and sincerely hope you choose to stay with us. In the event
you still migrate to another service provider, Pipex will of course always
welcome you back with open arms.

Kind regards

Mark Carberry

I had similar problem when i moved my LLU connection
The ISP issued me with a similar invalid MAC, but soon
issued me with a valid one when i pointed the fact out to
them
It SHOULD be in the form of :
LLLV001234/AB12A..different letters/numbers obviously, but
if you go the the BeThere site and put your phone number into
the availability checker, it should tell you what a valid code looks like
I would Email Pipex, or call them, cause this could just be a ruse so you
stay with them

I did contact my new ISP again - I think they'd made a mistake, and now the
MAC I gave them originally, that they'd said was duff, is now ok

Migration on the 18th

Good luck........these LLU back to IPStream arent as seemless as "ordinary" MACS
yet though, if my experience with them is anything to go by
