Hi,

I'm a Linux newbie and I've just started trying to create a home
network with a Windows (XP) machine and a Linux (Mandrake 9.2)
machine. I wanted to use rdesktop to connect to XP but I kept getting
a connection refused error.
I tried telnetting, ftping and pinging between the computers as a test
and only ping worked. I also shut down my router's firewall and
disabled my XP firewall but that did not seem to have any effect.

rdesktop, ftp and telnet all give essentially the same error message:
"Connection Refused".

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for any help!!

Mark

Have you configured XP to start the pertinent servers? E.g., if the
telnet server isn't running on XP, the connection will be refused when a
client tries to connect. The same goes for ftp and rdesktop.

I don't have XP here, but with Win2k at least only a telnet server is
actually included with Windows. You have to install your own ftp and
"terminal server" software to support ftp and rdesktop.

ftp and telnet aren't part of the normal XP installation (as someone
else already pointed out) for the RDesktop you need to activate the
'allow this machine to be remote-controlled' option.

Hi Guys,

Before I started trying to connect with rdesktop, ftp and telnet, I
went into the XP control panel and made sure the computer could be
controlled remotely. My steps included:

Start > Control Panel > System > Remote Tab > Advanced > Checkbox for
"Allow this computer to be controlled remotely."

I thought that would cover all the bases (hence this posting) but I
still couldn't make a connection.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Do you have anymore ideas?

Mark

You don't have ftp or telnet unless you use cygwin to
provide this services, if you need them, obviosly...
