using redhat 8.0, I am on a mainly windows 2000 network. w/o network
admin permission. I can get on the network and internet, but mozilla
and everything else is not recognizing internet names, like:

www.yahoo.com - 216.67.blah.blah, if I type the ip address, I can
connect, of course all I did was a simple dhcp, how can I get the dns
client ? to work?

Guessing /etc/resolf.conf does not have correct values, if any.

Your DHCP server should provide all the information, such as default
gateway and DNS. You will need to get your sysadmin to fix the DHCP
server.
