Which Wi-Fi vendors/products/models have the best Linux support??

I see many providers of PCI adapters for Wi-Fi PC Cards but I havent seen
anything about linux support for these adapters.. also I see many PCI Wi-Fi
adapters starting to appear but again very little on Linux support..

Is there a particular chipset to look out for for the best Linux support or is
each vendors product different even if they use the same chipset??

While I am at it what is the USB Wi-Fi adapter support like in Linux?

Thanks

I tried to find a card that is supported under Linux - but all the models I
could find had been replaced with newer models - some using different
chipsets.

The manufacturers change the internals of the cards but keep the same same
model number.

I have a Linksys WRT54G that has nmap states Linux is running in it - why
cant we get the drivers for the 54G cards that they use.

I bought a Orinoco Gold card just cause it will run with Linux as well as

I've had good success with the Senao/Engenius cards with the wlan-ng and
hostap drivers (these are pcmcia cards but they work fine in an adapte).
I've also used 11MB Netgear cards (both PCI and pcmcia) and just last week a
Linksys (wpc11 in an adapter I think). Probably the easiest to find cards
would be the Netgear 802.11B stuff.

The Belkin PLX (sort of a stripped down pci-pcmcia adapter for wireless
only) adapters seem to work fine.

Anything with a Prism 2 or 2.5 chipset should work fine. They used to be
VERY popular but newer cards seem to be using other chipsets.

Worse I think the Netgear 802.11B USB adapter works with the wlan-ng
drivers but I'm not positive.

I have an Atmel chipped Sitecom WL-011 (www.sitecom.com) running pretty fine
now. It didn't run out of the box but googling helped me out (again :-).
Also, upgrading to kernel 2.4.21 solved the problem of losing connection
once in a while (ranging from every few minutes to a few times a day). I
think Sitecom also has a usb wireless adapter that should run under linux.

Good luck,
Marc

The Microsoft wireless stuff uses prism chipsets and tends to work quite
well with both linux-wlan-ng and HostAP.

Anything based on the PRISM II chipset (so far, I've used the Orinoco
series, a D-Link 650, an Engenius 2052EL) works fine, for sure. There
are other vendors supported, as well.
