I've been asked to look into setting up BT Broadband for Business on a
standalone Linux system (Mandriva 2006) can anyone point me to a setup
guide please ? At home I use cable so I've no idea what to expect in
terms of equipment supplied, settings to use - presumably it can be set
up manually without using a Windows set up cd.
Thanks

Just use a router, get the IP addresses configured and log in through
that.

What do you want to do with it? How do you want to connect? I have
Mandriva (2005) on DHCP and Ubuntu (Static IP) connected to a router
which is connected to the phone line. They both installed off the Linux
install CDs the Mandriva is Dual boot to Windows and Ubuntu is on its own.

They both installed fine out of the box and talk to my broadband fine,
picking most of the setting up from the router DNS etc.

The more you tell me the more I can help.

Fergus.

Can't point you at anything, but out of the box, linux supports
ethernet networking, and business broadband routers are generally
ethernet too, so you can probably just plug the two together with some
CAT5 cable, and tell the linux system to use DHCP to get an address
etc.

A windows setup CD won't be much use with Linux...

Thanks Fergus and Andrew, sounds like it's pretty much like a cable
connection in terms of set up.
Fergus, not sure what you mean by they installed of the Linux cd's, are
you referring to the distro cd's or does BT supply a Linux version ?
As to what they want to do with it, just browse the net and use it for e
mail it being just the one pc.
They currently supply a Voyager 220V router, do you know if this works
with Linux or will a different model be needed ?
Can't really tell you any more, the wife came home and said "I've been
asked to look into getting a broadband connection for the office, can
you help ?" so I don't really know much more than that.
BTW, my first time in this group, you guys don't hang about replying do
you ? Much appreciated, thanks.

Yes

Most routers will work with Linux if it is just a DHCP server etc. I
don't know about this one. A quick google should answer that for you.
If it's configured by web interface even better.

How big is the office? If its just a small office a good router and a
hub or two should do the trick, in which case you don't really need a
Linux box at all.

ensure you get an ethernet router then you'll stay clear of driver
issues. Go look at the ADSLguide reviews section for screenshots of
routers in action on ADSL <http://www.adslguide.org.uk/reviews>

the froums there have a Linux section and a BTBB section.

Just a small office, they use the Mandriva pc to connect using dial-up
at the moment so will continue to use it with broadband, they do have
Windows lan but at the moment they don't plan to network the 2, but
then once they get started....
Looks as though my next move is //www.adslguide.org.uk as also suggested
but that is for another day, for now it's the pub :-)) Thanks everyone

Yes.

No, its pritty imaterial anyway how it was installed if a router is
involved.

Fine - it also gives them room to expand to expand as they are in an
office - it could be the start of their LAN .

It should do. I think this is probably the replacement to the
discontinued (?) 105 router, which had one ethernet port (which can
connect either to a computer directly or to a switch for more
machines), and a USB port, which is not needed in most cases.

Are you restricted to BT?

No but they like BT...I will be looking at other ISPs but I suspect I
won't change their old fashioned view that anything telephone related
has to be BT
