Hello,

I would like to ask, which linux utilities are either standard in linux or
which packets are necessary to be installed, to be able to sniffer packets,
which go through the local segment of the net. In concrete, it concerns promiscuous
monitoring of packet and writing of data to the table. It concerns
sniffering of information like "which IP communicates with which",
information about packet etc., it should set in the software equivalent to
probe RMON2.
I will be grateful for every advice, I prefer programs without graphic
interface, just classic console programs.
I use C libraries in distribution Fedora Core 3 for
my implementation, but I am also interested in other distributions, which
you have an experience with.
Thank you for advices and information about discussion groups, where is
possible to get more information about the mentioned problems.

Thanx for your help
Paul

tcpdump is probably what you want. It comes with source code.
You can do this sort of thing in your own software with pcap.
