Somwwhat of a linux newbie. Have a few mail and file servers running.

Looking for recommendations for the following "conversion" . . .

Existing Network:

1 NT4 Srvr - PDC / File Server
1 NT4 Srvr - BDC / File Server / DHCP / WINS
1 Suse 9.0 - File Server
1 Win 2K Pro - File / FTP Server
1 Suse 7.3 - E-Mail (Sendmail/POP3)

"To Be" Network:

1 NT4 Server (Current NT4 Hardware Combined Into One) - File / PDC-BDC??
Server
1 Suse 9.0 - File Server (Existing)
1 Suse 9.x - File / PDC-BDC?? Server (New Box)
1 Suse 9.x - E-Mail / File Server (Win2K Box Reinstalled)

A winnt4 box has to stay in the loop as an accounting program requires it.

Should the NT4 box continue as the PDC or should a Linux box be transitioned
to PDC w/ the NT4 as a BDC??

If a linux box is PDC how will it effect the XP Pro client pc's and their NT
SAM logon accounts?

Thoughts and opinions welcomed.

Thanks - Ken

IMHO, you have to keep the domain control in
Windows boxes only or in Linux/Samba boxes, but not
mixed. This is due to that the Domain Control transfer
protocol is not documented and not well supported
outside Microsoft.

The file servers, DHCP servers, name servers and FTP
(my preference: SCP) servers are pretty easily moved.
The same applies to mail, though, IMHO, Sendmail is
by far the most difficult mail handler to set up and
maintain.

For a mixed Windows / Linux network the files need to
be served with Samba. For a Linux / Linux (and MAC OSX)
file connection, NFS gives better attribute handling.

Thanks for your input.

It looks like I will be leaving the NT4 machine as the PDC and configure the
linux/suse boxes as BDC machines. Looks like WinBind will be a good
utility/app to accomplish this and carry over the NT user accounts and
security groups.

Anyones input on WinBind appreciated

Ken
