What is the procedure for setting up a linux box
(gateway,server,firewall) and windows workstations.
Is it necessary to set up DNS, DHCP?
Must I set the ip forwarding, masqurading, (iptables) thing. I've read
abt this I tried following it but they didn't work.May b cos they were
not properly staged. I need to know what and what r the necessary
steps.
I did try gettin my route work but I met different approach to the
route command. This ended up confusin me the more. Can some help with a
neat and uncumbersome procedure.
Like
step 1: this
step 2: this and this
step 3: this, this and this.
Also the iptable scripts are they important. What others things do I
need. How do I know which eth(x) is for internal or which is for
external?
I network I was running the eth0 was up and runnin but the eth1 was up
but not running.I tried pinging it from the windows machine (i gave
the window machine an IP and the linux box ip as gateway) but i said
request timed out.
I tried pingin the (window) workstation from the linux box but
itdidn't send a reply.

Not necessary but setting up a forwarding name server (see
www.tldp.org for the DNS howto a step by step guide) should speed
things up in addition to a squid (www.squid-cache.org) proxy
server. I'd setup transparent proxying effectively forcing your
clients to use the proxy. Wouldn't NAT doze clients directly to
the internet for security reasons, in addition do yourself a big
favor and remove IE and Outlook from all systems, use mozilla or
and firefox (Users love it ones they start using tabbed browsing)
for surfing www.mozilla.org and one of the MUA offered in
addition, or any other capable doze mail user agent (MUA).

Setting up DHCP would help you in the long run if clients are
changed or/and freshly installed, added, etc frequently.

Good luck

Unsure how this is related?

Anyway, personally use zero antivirus software, there's no need
if you don't use doze.

...or any conversation for that matter, is that it can branch? Dont you
think.

The converstation bent toward software packages, mail software, spam...
viruses are esentially transmitted via networks, mostly running linyx.

Cool. I've never come across any linux virii,... But I'm sure there are
nasty linux trojans out there...

You might want to open a new thread with your questions, simply
jumping on someone else thread, isn't really what usenet is
about.

Be my guest:

"ESR's Howto ask smart questions"
http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

"Netiquette Guidelines RFC1855"
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1855.html

[..]

Good luck
