Hello all,

I am looking for a small tool to monitor the status of the network on a
firewall. I have seen a number of larger tool to monitor a bunch of things
but I just want to monitor that the two interface are still passing traffic
and log the information. The firewall does not X windows installed on it so
a console app would be a bonus.

Cheers,

Derek

There are many sniffers that you can use to capture and log network
traffic. Ethereal is good.

http://www.ethereal.com/

You can use tcpdump also,

x86

SuSE Linux 9.0-Intel Pentium M 1.40GHz-512 MB-40
GB-14"-1024x768-4.5-4.9 lbs-CD-RW/DVD-ROM-Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit
Ethernet-Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection 802.11b

Sorry, do not need a sniffer. I have been using tcpdump and etheral for a
while. I need a program that will run as a daemon and monitor the health if
the connection in order to determine downtime.

If its peering with a router at the other end, you might consider
heartbeat.

Package: heartbeat
Description: Subsystem for High-Availability Linux
heartbeat is a basic heartbeat subsystem for Linux-HA.
It will run scripts at initialisation, and when machines go up or down.
This version will also perform IP address takeover using gratuitous ARPs.
It works correctly for a 2-node configuration, and is extensible to larger
configurations.
It implements the following kinds of heartbeats:
* Bidirectional Serial Rings ("raw" serial ports)
* UDP/IP broadcast (ethernet, etc)
