Greetings.

I just started volunteering at an office in London with a BT Broadband
connection provided via a USB modem -- specifically, it's an Intel
AnyPoint DSL Modem 3240.

My laptop is a GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.3) system, and I can't seem to find
any way of successfully setting up an Internet connection with this
modem. Nor can I find any Linux drivers on the Web, though it's
possible I may have overlooked them.

Has anyone had success configuring this modem for use with Linux? If
not, can I replace the AnyPoint 3240 with any old (Linux-compatible)
DSL modem? Or do I need to buy a router?

Regards,
Tristan

Always best to have a router in the middle and then get Linux PC
to connect to the router. Routers normally support all the major
connection protocols between it and the service provider insulating you from
having to have those same things in software for all the different PCs
and all the different operating systems connecting to the internet.
www.ebuyer.com has them for under 20 quid.

While Ebuyer does have a single port router at 19.99 (+VAT) I'd
strongly recommend getting a 4-port ADSL/router for a few quid more
which will probably not get as hot, and the odds are that sometime
more than one user will want the net at the same time, so second
and subsequent ports will be useful later. Peter M.

USB modems are a word of pain with linux. Save yourself the hassle and
get a modem with an ethernet port.
