What is the linux equivalent of windows 'ipconfig' ?
I want to get an overview of the network adapters in the machine.

Please also tell me if the command is distribution independent (lets
say for all distributions released in the last 2 years)

equivalent? Well I guess ifconfig is closest ( except it does a lot more)

For wireless setup (ESSID, key, ....) iwconfig

Yes. For all distributions of the last 10 years, or more.

Did you try this as a non-root user? If so, it's likely ifconfig is not
in your path. Try /sbin/ifconfig instead.

Sorry, yes i found ifconfig after using 'su'.

But i need some way to the get the network configuration without
becoming root. The best would be to get the Manufactor and MAC address
but even the IP+Netmask would help a little bit.

/sbin/ifconfig works on my SUSE Enterprise Server 9. Add /sbin to your
PATH (with PATH="/sbin:$PATH" if you weren't sure how).

Is that because it doesn't work if you type "ifconfig"?

How about /sbin/ifconfig instead?
