Linux DHCP updating Windows 2000 DNS

We are looking at alternatives to our Windows DHCP servers as they do
not provide any clustering type functions.

I downloaded ISC's DHCP server and loaded it on 2 RedHat 7.3 boxes and
I have it clustering fine (once I synched clocks) and giving out IP's
to my XP workstations.

My only issue is that I can't seem to get DDNS working. The DNS
servers my clients point to are W2k DNS servers so they need to be
updated when a client gets a new lease.

I have my ddns-update-style set to interim, which from reading, is the
only setting that will support clustering.

Has anyone else gotten this to work in such a configuration?

If this is the wrong forum to ask or it has already been answered
somewhere else (I couldn't find any similar posts) redirection would be
much appreciated.

Thanks

Tony D'Alessio

I haven't tried with Windows DNS servers. But I have gotten DDSN
working with bind/ISC dhcp. And, we use Windows DNS and Windows DHCP at
work, so I'm at least familiar with all the components...

The first thing I would try is to set the Windows DNS servers to not
require Secure updates, which I think is the default config, at least
when Active Directory is involved.

Doing a little searching, I found the following :
http://homepages.tesco.net./~J.deBoy...e-updates.html

It doesn't specifically say that insecure updates will work, but that is
implied. Note that allowing insecure updates may or may not be
acceptable in your environment. But if that "fixes" it, at least you'll
know what the issue was.

Even though it isn't about bind, you may want to check in
comp.protocols.dns.bind since there's a fair number of posts there about
ddns. There are also the MS news groups...microsoft.public.win2000.dns
may be another good place to start.

Good luck.
