linux command to issue a join for a host participating in multicast grroup

can anybody tell the linux command that we can enter in a PC to make it
issue a join message to a multicast group?

Alot of that is out of date for 2.6 and becoming a multicast router is
not required to just issue a join and route manually.

works for me on 2.6.12, there is an app called igmpproxy on freshmeat,
but I've read it can be not working/sensitive to config detail.
