If I use a crossover cable between a xp machine and a linux machine I cannot
read the xp machine with smb. If I hook both machines up to my workgroup
switch and router the linux machine will read the xp machine with smb. Why
would the crossover cable not let the linux read the xp machine?

which computer is acting as your DHCP server?
are you manually assigning IP addresses? what is the IP address range?
are they on the same subnet?

your router does all the above for you. the crossover cable does not.
