I am putting together a wireless network in my home. 2 laptops and a
cable modem. Both laptops to be mobile/wireless only. I have a cable
modem connected to a linksys WRT54G wireless router. A newer laptop
(OS XP home ed.) with a linksys wireless PCMCIA card WPC54G. Works
perfectly. Second laptop is older, excellent machine, 266mhz, 1.1 usb,
pcmcia slot open, running Win 98SE. I installed the same card as in my
newer laptop - WPC54G. Works great. Perfect, except that I get static
from the WiFi signal which is audible (loud) in the speakers of the
laptop. Speakers off = no static. But, I want to use the sound. Tried
another WPC54G card--same. Conclusion: laptop manufactured before
wireless networking cards popular and so has no shielding. But
otherwise a great laptop for my purposes. So, solution is to use a usb
wireless network adapter so as to get the device away fromthe speakers
and laptop circuitry. Problem is, nobody makes a usb wireless G
adapter that is compatible with Win 98se usb 1.1 and 266 clock speed.
Linksys has one in "b", their new "G" model requires Win 2000 or XP,
and 400 mhz. However, I have heard of people using this model with Win
98se. In fact, some websites (bestbuy) give info that the WUSB54G IS
compatible with win 98SE. Linksys product box and their website say
Win 2000 or XP only. I have read newsgroup posts about people using
this device with Win 98se. Stumped? Anyone know if this device can be
used with 98se or not? Otherwise I'll just go with an all "b" system,
since having one laptop on b and another on G makes no sense at
all(lose all the benefit of G). Is my logic sound?
