Hi,

Has anybody been able to use the Linksys WRV54G wireless router to
accept VPN connections from an outside network? Below is what I'm
trying to do:

Network A (Home): Home Lan->WRV54G Router->Internet
Network B (Work): Windows XP machine->LAN->Router->Internet

I want to be able to use my windows XP machine at work to set up a VPN
tunnel into the WRV54G and access files on my home LAN.

I followed Linksys's directions on how to set up an IP Security
Policy, when I activate it and ping my home ip address (192.168.1.1)
from work. I get the following messages:
Negotiating IP Security.
Ping Statistics for 192.168.1.1
Packets: Sent=4, Received=0, Lost=4 (100% Loss).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

There can be many things wrong.
But first thing that can't be done is connect to 192.168.1.1
This is an ip in the private range.
You need to know the external ip, the one you get assigned from you ISP.

Willem.

Joseph You might want to consider at your network in your house setting up
a linux box. I reccomend ASTARA Security Linux you can get a free home
version here http://www.astaro.com/ with this software that is webbased.
you can set-up vpn through this box using PPTP(point to point tunneling
protocol). It is very easy to use and set-up. I have one at my house and I
have 3 other networks all vpn'd at the same time with this box.

Let me know if you need any help.

You need to be connecting to your public IP address (assigned by your
ISP) and not the private IP address of your router.

You can find out your public IP address by bringing up the Status page
on your router while at home. Keep in mind that it can change at any
time so you might want to look into one of the services that let you
associate your IP address /w a domain name on a dynamic basis. That
way you can just connect to whateverdomain.com and it will find your
router. Some are free some are for fee.

Also, if your work uses outbound firewalls (and most all businesses
do) you may have a hard time making a VPN link work as they requrire
ports that are not normally open.

I would suggest using a dial up connection to the internet (no
firewalls, routers, or the like) to test with. Once that works then
you can try your work setup.
