Linksys WRTG54G & Dropped Connections

After reading through this forum, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one
experiencing dropped connections... Mind you, I'm not glad any of us have
this problem, just that it appears to be a prevalent problem.

Stupid me... After reading PC magazines recent issue on wireless
networking, I agreed that I should get the latest FW upgrades for the WRT54G
router, after all, I planned on upgrading to a "pure" WPA environment in the
very near future.

Installation and setup was a breeze, the interface was vastly improved
compared against what I've been accustomed to on my Netgear RT314 (hardwire)
router. Flashing the router was very easy. Installing the WUSB54G USB
adapter on the remote PC was also painless.

Then the problems started. I could never keep a connection up between the
router and the remote PC. Almost like clockwork, the network connection
would drop every 2 minutes and a message would pop up saying one or more
networks were found. The first contact with Linksys tech support was with
a girl who spoke so fast, and with a terrible overseas accent, that I was
barely able to make out what she was saying. The 2nd call landed me with a
guy in the Phillipines who spoke very good English, and was quite adept at
reading a script. I spent nearly an hour on the phone with him and applied
all sorts of different configuration changes, but still no fix for the
problem. And the third call... not much to report there...

Channels were changed, RTS thresholds were changed, WEP keys were double
checked, and other advanced options were also verified and a few were
modified. Obvious issues like cordless phones, obstructed antennas, etc are
not an issue.

The WLAN utility seemed to do a better job at maintaining a connection vs.
Windows WZC utility, but neither one of them really did work satisfactory.
Linksys Tech Support also suggested that I download and use Boingo to
maintain my connection... I searched their site and the Linksys WUSB54G was
not listed.... Maybe the tech forgot I was using a USB adapter.

I've also been involved in several threads over at dslreports.com with
nothing being suggested that fixed the problem, I'm confident that I've
about done everything all I can do.

I was really looking forward to going wireless, but I don't think it's worth
all this hassle. The products are getting returned.

David...

I too tried Linksys, returned the hardware.

I bought a Belkin wireless router and USB wireless connector.

I have two systems one close to the router, hardwired into the
ethernet port. It hardly ever looses connection.

The second system is about 500 feet from the router and the wireless
Belkin USB adaptor drops connection 1 - 2 times a day.

I get 1.2 - 1.4 mbps from my ISP through a wireless Navini antenna.
The tower is 4 miles away.

If you still want to try wireless take a look at Belkin.

No I don't work for them.
I am a retired programmer.

Interesting I have read all the linksys problems here, but still have
not seen the dropped connections. The BEFW11S4 ver4 that I currently
use has worked like a charm.

Any 2.4ghz phones around???

Good luck.

There may be, but I don't think I'm going to go knock on my apartment
neighbors door and ask if they have a 2.4 phone in use...

I routinely leave ssh/Windows open all day. The only trouble I have had is
that I can't get Linux drivers and when my wife gets too close to the WAP or
PC with the 2.4GHz phone. Otherwise it is a clear sail. There is 35 feet
and 2 walls between the portable and the AP.

Under the authentication tab for your cards properties, do you have a check
mark in the box to authenticate? If you do, that could be your problem.
With XP, you should not have it checked, or like you said, your connection
will drop every few minutes.

SSeaW,

Thanks... I originally thought it should be on (I am on XP Pro), but
Linksys tech support asked to have it turned off. So I disabled it and
still was not able to work through it. Their final thought was to return
the equipment...

Dave A,

How close is to close ?

I have 900MHz phones so that's not a problem, but I am wondering about
neighbors.

At what range do the 2.4GHz phones create a problem. It doesn't seem like
an apartment neighbor, at least 50' away and several walls between us should
be an issue.

David - have you changed channels to see if it makes a difference? My
2.4 GHz Uniden phone will kill my connection on channel 11. So, I
moved my WRT54G all the way down to channel 1 and it works great. I
can sit in my Lazyboy, use my laptop while on-line and talk on the
phone at the same time. No issues.

Just a thought..

Scott,

In the course of 24 -36 hours, I tried the entire range of channels. I'm
also able to see a couple of other networks around me so I did my best to
avoide those channels.

Thanks,

David...
