Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.
I have one of said routers, a v1.1 model. I heard that, by loading 3rd
party firmware, it's possible to get it to act as a wireless bridge
with another router so I bought another the same, loaded the firmware
onto the original one (knowing that it won't work on the latest models
and not wanting to risk damaging the new one) and tried to get it to
work.
To cut a long story short, the reason it wouldn't is that the latest
models, v5.x, use a completely different firmware and no longer
support bridging like this.
So, before I return the v5.1 router, I thought it worth asking if
anyone here, preferably in the Bristol area, has a WRT54GS v4 or lower
and would be interested in swapping it for a brand new current model?
The new ones are supposed to be more stable and higher power on the
Wi-Fi side, they're just no good if you want to replace the firmware
and make it do things it doesn't do as standard but only a few of us
are daft enough to try!
Alternatively, maybe someone has a v4 or lower model that they want to
sell? It must be the GS model though as it's to send video downstairs
so I need the "SpeedBooster" enhancement.
TIA.
