Linksys WRT54G - must choose between wired or wireless?

End user with Verizon (PPPoE) DSL talking to Linksys WRT54G, feeding a
desktop over Cat 5, and two (-b and -g, respectively) wireless
connections. Router's been swapped once already - seems to happen a
lot at Linksys. :-)

Here's my problem:

As long as I disconnect the ethernet cable, the wireless works fine.
As long as I tell the router to disconnect the wireless, the wired
desktop works fine. When both are connected, they can talk to each
other (whoopee!) but have severe problems (packet loss > 50%, etc.)
talking to the internet. I make this problem happen and go away at
will, no need to reboot anything. Does not seem to be a -b vs. -g
problem, as I have the same problem with only one device (and forcing
the router into a single mode.)

Any ideas would sincerely be appreciated. (Firmware?)

Why can't I have them all on the same subnet?
