I have my cable running into a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G 2.4 GHz Router and
a WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook Adaptor. When I take my laptop into my back
yard (approx 25 feet) I lose my connection even with the back door open. I
do have aluminum siding, any ideas?

Sounds like you might need an outdoor antenna and pigtail for the WRT54G.

Browse around http://www.hyperlinktech.com for what you need. Your siding
is creating a nice Faraday Cage and attenuating your signal. Look on the
bright side, your neighbors can't poach Internet service from you.

If it's any consolation, I've also got a WRT54G and Aluminum siding. I
can get a passible signal 25-30 feet away outside, but the WRT54 has a few
other problems - when I got it, I used to use a diningroom table which is
only about 20 feet away indors. Using a Linksys G card and the Linksys
utilities, I'd get 90%-100% on my signal. That lasted for about a month,
then it gradually started dropping off until now its about 60-70%. I
leave the WRT54 on all the time with WEP enabled, and I'm wondering if the
final stage isn't very robust. I noticed the gradual decrease in s/n
under Linux (WiFi Manager app) and confirmed it by using Linksys's Windows
software.

Well basically, 2.4 Ghz signals do NOT travel through metal very well at
all. Your microwave is lined with metal to keep the signal from leaking out
of it, and the microwave is MUCH more powerful. So, if the door is open and
you are "line-of-site" you might get a signal. However, the signal is
"line-of-site" with some reflections, so just having the door open won't do
you much good unless you, the door, and the AP make a straight line.

If you really want any serious signal outside, you will probably have to get
an outdoor antennae.

Hi,
I am an MCSE in the San Francisco Bay Area and I have set up a number of
wireless networks. Get you a Linksys WSB24 Signal Booster to go with your
router and that would increase the signal.
