Linksys WRT54G dropping connections

Hello all,

Looking for advice, suggestions - have a linksys WRT54G wireless
router, connected to cable modem, with the router providing wireless
access to three different laptops and 2 desktop computers in the
house. I have 128-bit WEP enabled. For the last 6 weeks or so, all
was great. Laptops would see the router and pick up DHCP-assigned
addresses just fine. In the last week, I've noticed that the Linksys
suddenly drops all connections, both wired and wireless, for no
apparent reason, often while one or two users are on the web. If I
power-cycle the Linksys, the connections are restored. Temporarily.
Then within a few hours, sometimes sooner, the connections drop again.

It doesn't appear to be a cable modem problem, because power-cycling
it doesn't restore connections - only when I power-cycle the Linksys
do the connections restore. I found one KB article on the Linksys
website that says to try a different channel - did that, no joy. Same
problem. I've seen some posts from other users suggesting disabling
WEP...haven't tried that yet(don't particularly want to, either)
....wondering if anyone has a better fix before I go that route?

Dave

This is sounding almost exactly like the symptoms I have been reporting
on the BEFW11S4 model of Linksys router. (If so, it seems to have NOTHING
to do with any of the specific settings on the wireless side at all! There
is no know
fix/workaround for those symptoms on the BEFW11S4 and in fact, mine locked
up
when none of my wireless clients were even connecting at all! That might be
a good
scenario to test if you have 2 client PCs that are using hard-wired ports.
Use ONLY
those two PCs for a day or so, and see if you can get the router to lock up
using just
those PCs. On the BEFW11S4, I could.)

I speculate that the reason both models are exhibiting this problem is that
their firmware
programming code has a subset of programming logic that is 'common' to both
products
and that the programming bug is in this common code. (Of course, I don't
work for
Linksys, so I have no way to confirm or deny this theory.)

Mr. Cook, may I ask what you eventually did? I'm about at the point
where I am going to attempt to ask (shudder) for my money back for
this router...not interested in a replacement, having seen the
numerous posts here about problems with Linksys products.

Along the same lines... have you changed channels? I had much better
luck on channel 1 compared to channel 11. My cordless phone would
kill my channel 11 connections.
