linksys WRT54G and iPAQ issues

I recently bought and setup a linksys WRT54G wireless router to use in
my home to provide wirless access to my laptop, and all worked great,
right out of the box...my laptop has a "g" compatible card, and with
the router in "mixed" mode, I was surfing just fine at 54mbps.

Then I got a little adventurous with the configuration...the first
thing I did was enable WEP between the laptop and the router - again,
no problems. Connected my laptop using 128-bit WEP enable encryption
beautifully. But then...I decided to see if I could get my iPAQ 5400
PDA connected wirelessly. And thats where the problems began. Try as
I might, I was never even able to get the iPAQ to register signal
strength from the router, let alone obtain an IP address. After
futzing around unsuccessfully with the iPAQ, I tried reconfiguring the
router from "mixed" to "b" only mode, and I disabled WEP, both on the
router and on the iPAQ. Suddenly, magically, I have great signal
strength and an IP on the iPAQ and am surfing the web just fine.
Tried re-enabling WEP and reoonfigured the router back to "mixed"
mode, and the iPAQ again doesn't register any signal strength, doesn't
get an ip, and fails to reconnect. Updated firmware of the router -
same issue. Cannot obtain ip for the iPAQ with WEP enabled. Even more
troubling now is that, even with the router back in "mixed" mode, my
laptop will only connect at the "b" rate of 11mbps, unless I manually
go into the card properties in device manager and set the rate to
54mbps. If I do that, the laptop is back to 54mbps connection speeds.
Puzzling.

So, I guess I'm asking about 2 issues - first, has anyone been able to
successfully configure their iPAQ to connect to their linksys router
using WEP, and second, if one changes from "mixed" mode to "b" mode
and then back to "mixed" mode, how does one obtain 54mbps connection
rates without manually configuring the rate settings of the wireless
adapter? Any comments, suggestions appreciated.

Dave

Sounds like you haven't applied the wlan patch that HP has on their site. I
would start there first, I've heard that the new wlan firmware helps with
accessing G networks. Also make sure you have the correct rom on your ipaq
before applying the wlan firmware. It should be listed on HP's site.

Try using only 64-bit WEP and see if that helps. I've seen
incompatibilities with 128-bit WEP between different manufactors.
