Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G is complete garbage. It's deceptive because
it works great when it works, but then stops working completely.
Sometimes it disconnects for 30 minutes or longer. That's not
broadband - that's crapband. **Very frustrating** I've called
Linksys and they say to change this setting, change that setting, but
there's no overall improvement. And this is my **second** WRT54G.
The first one degraded to a distance of <10 feet within days of buying
it, so I exchanged it. I'm beyond the 30 day return policy at Best
Buy, so I'm stuck with it. And Linksys will not refund my money
directly. Best Buy sucks for selling this crap.

My advice:
1) Don't buy a Linksys WRT54G. I won't buy another Linkcrap product
until I forget about this disaster, which may take 10 years.
2) If you've already bought a WRT54G and are still within the 30 day
return limit, return it immediately. Don't waste another moment. I
wish I'd had this advice.
3) zdnet has wireless reviews, which I didn't know before.
http://reviews-zdnet.com.com , then click networking wi-fi link, then
click 802.11g link, then click on "editor ratings" header to sort by
ratings.

Feel free to append your "my Linkcrap router sucks too" responses.

I really like mine.
"does exactly what it says on the tin".

Plus, I can run programs on it to add functionality that few or no
routers have.

Sorry to hear you've had so much grief from your WRT54G. Mine, on the
other hand, has worked pretty much flawlessly since I got it home a
couple of months ago. 128bit WEP, SSID broadcast disabled, MAC
filtering, port forwarding, security policy (restricts the kid from
playing XBOX Live while he's grounded etc. all seem to be working as
advertised. I've got a WPC55AG in a laptop that wanders around the
house with me, and don't seem to have any range problems. The WMP54G I
installed in another computer hasn't been entirely trouble-free
(I'm on my second one), but since the RMA of the original it hasn't been
a problem either.

Given the pollution on the 2.4GHz spectrum by a number of increasingly
common household devices, I wouldn't place the blame squarely on the
WRT54G. There could be other explanations for the problems you
encountered.

No problems here at all. No telling what the real problem is.
My brother has one and loves it. He even brought one for his daugther.

Return it and try a d-link or something like that. I have had good
luck with d-link also.

Good luck

How do you do that?

Any links?

I agree with you about the WRT54G. Mine drops the connection less than 5
minutes into each session. That is, I power up Compaq notebook which has a
built-in Broadcom 54g adapter, the connection is established, everything is
fine for a few minutes, than nothing. According to the radio utility, the
signal is fine, but key is absent. Have to disable and re-enable the
connectoid and everything is fine for as long as the laptop is powered on.
This happens consistantly so it's not a fluke.

Had mine for a few months, and had no problems with the performance of the
unit. Had a problem with the wired ports where my pc lost all communication
with the router after 10 seconds, but that turned out to be something with
my PC (as a reinstall of XP worked).

What I would say, is that if you are in the UK you can return any item
within 6 months of purchase to the supplier and ask for a
replacement/repair/refund. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. This is law
since March 2003 and is part of the Sale of Goods Act (as amended) and the
Supply of Goods and Services Act.

Solution is easy. Go to Best buy and buy another router of same model, using
Credit card of course. Then return your Old Linksys as a not happy purchase.
You then have new router and move on with it.
