Linksys Wireless G PCI Adapter & XP freezing

Here's my system specs ( very basic )

- Intel PIII ( 451 MHZ )
- 256 MB RAM
- ASUS Motherboard
- Western Digital 40MB HD
- Fujitsu 10MB HD
- IOMEGA ZIPCD
- U.S Robotics 56K modem
- Creative SB Live ( SoundCard )
- ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X

- Windows XP Pro

ISP - Rogers

I was currently using Linksys 802.11b router and a generic network card to
connect to the net.
I decided to go G-Band so I bought the Router and the WMP54G Wireless-G PCI
Adapter.

I removed my old network card and placed the Wireless-G PCI Adapter into the
same slot. When I boot up my PC it just freezes! It doesn't load the BIOS,
the lights on my keyboard don't go on/off, the red light on the tower stays
red and the monitor screen is just blank.

I thought it might be a conflict so I removed my sound card and modem. Still
freezes.
I tried every other slot. Still freezes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Oh, If I remove the Wireless G PCI Card it boots up. It only freezes when
it's in a slot.

Sounds like your gonna have to take it back..

I suppose you could try re-setting the BIOS setting on your mother board so
that it updates the devices attached to it?

But I doubt that will work, it should pick it up right away, the ONLY other
thing I can think of is that the new PCI card is perhaps for a slightly
faster machine; ie 600mhz..
Check the box!

I had pulled my hair out after getting a USB PCI card for a friends machine
(233mhz) I tested it on my machine (much faster one) and it worked, had
simalar results you were getting, as in it didnt work on the 233.
I never did get any info with the card, so I presume that it will only work
in machines with a certain minimum spec.

Or.. its faulty.

Regards
Alan

My wife's computer; PIII 500 mhz, 384 ram, ASUS P2B motherboard has the
EXACT same problem. I put the card in my machine, P4 2.6 mhz., 1 G ram,
etc., and it recognized it and started fine.

I did notice my wife's computer will freeze at different places in the BIOS
depending on how many cards I have in the PCI slots. With just the sound
card it freezes immediately and won't even wake the monitor. With a PCI
Ultra 66 controller card on one side of it and a modem card on the other, it
actually makes it to the plug and play detection spot. I played with IRQs
and everything I could think of w/o any luck. I've about given up.

I just changed over from wired to wireless on a new Dell running XP.
The card mfgr. said to install the s/w first, shut down the computer,
install the card and turn on the computer. This procedure worked fine
since the h/w wizard found the card & the s/w (I had downloaded the
latest version instead of installing from the pkg CD.). Have to tried
this method?

I would suggest that you go to the Linksys Website and download the driver
for the card. Then you could go to Device Manager by right-clicking the MY
Computer Line/Properties and find the card and install the driver and
configure the card at that point.

I can see no reason that the card wouldn't work, other than, the driver that
is being used on the card, something that Windows selected is incompatible.

It sounds like you are saying that even if you put
the same boards back just as BEFORE that
NOW it still won't even load the BIOS, whereas
before it would.

If so, then it seems that one possibility is that you could have broken
an etch on the motherboard and (permanently) damaged it. Of course,
there may be other possibilities too, but you can't rule this possibility
out.

(It wasn't the OS or anything in the software on the disk that will explain
this
new broken behavior, so broken HARDWARE seems most likely.)

My 2-cents worth...

Dave

I have the same problem with my wife's computer. The MB is a 4-5 year old
ASUS P2B. The card prevents the machine from doing anything...very strange.
Pull out the card and all is well.

How can placing this card in a PCI slot possibly keep the BIOS from loading
the default settings? If it froze during the operating system's device
driver loading phase I could understand it, but this makes no sense.

I have the same problem on 2 different PCs. No beep or video.

Any ideas of why this is happening?

Thanks,
Art

I had the same issue with a D-Link wireless G card. My xp pro p4 machine
would boot up, but within a few minutes would reboot itself, but would then
hang. Went round and round with this, had to boot in safe mode, uninstall
device. D-link said it was most likely a bios issue with my pc. I gave up
and bought a USB adapter, all is well now.
