Linksys WCG200

Does anyone know offhand whether this "Wireless-G Cable Modem" device
can be run as a router BEFORE it's attached to highspeed cable? (It has
4 cat5 ports in addition to wireless.)

Cable will be installed in a few days. I'm just trying to get the LAN
(the wired part of it, at least - my host Win2000 + 2 other Win2000 PCs,
all in my office) up and running on the new gear ahead of time.

As now installed without the internet cable, the WCG200 is USB-attached
to my host PC, and cat5-cabled to the other 2 PCs. I have been able to
ping, intermittently, among the router and the 3 PC, but never both ways
among all 4 devices - and I have been unable to do file transfers at all
among the 3 PCs.

I haven't been able to get it running either with dynamic or static IP
setups. I'll keep trying various config settings, but I have a lingering
doubt about the question above. I did ask Linksys tech support (offshore
in the Phillipines; I'm in Florida) and they said it should work...but
I'm not certain the tech really understood my question - or knew the answer.

I can find nothing about this at www.linksys.com. There may be a trivial
answer, like "Of course not, fathead!" :-)

In the meanwhile, when I need to move files around, I'm detaching all
the cat5 cables and the WCG200, and reattaching the 3 PCs via the old
ethernet coax workgroup daisy-chain.
