Linksys WAP54g and WEP

I recently purchased a Linksys WAP54g (v2) access point.

I am trying to set it up in "access point client" mode
to communicate with my Linksys WRT54g router. It all
works just fine until I try to enable WEP.

When I enable the WEP in the web interface and tell it
to save the settings it always comes back as disabled.

I have the latest software: 2.07. Tech support was
not able to help me. Browsing the web did not turn
up anything that would solve this problem.

I doubt I am the first one that has ever run into this.
Can someone here share how they solved this issue
(I.e. how to get WEP to work with Access point client mode)
or suggest a new place I could go look?

I think this is a bug, radiobutton doesn't present the truth.

Well, I have done this yesterday, with WAP54g v1.0 and WRT54g.
On the same config page where you set your WAP54g access point client mode
click the button next to the MAC address of the router. Select your network
on the displayed list. Your access point should detect that the connection
is WEP, and ask you to input your WEP key.

When I enabled the WEP in the web interface it didn't work, only
after I did the WEP setting from the access point client mode tab.

I'm not 100% sure this is all I did... But maybe it will help.

Thanks for your response. I have (had) a WAP54g v2.0 and unfortunately
this did not work. First of all I could not get my network to show up
even though my WRT54g router was broadcasting the SSID. (networking
working worked fine if I just specified my network or chose to connect
to "ANY")

I called tech support and talked to a second tier tech. He tried to
reproduce the problem in his lab. He was able to reproduce and tried
your method of connecting to a WEP enabled network from the list.
(this worked for him) He could not get WEP encryption to work with
the WAP in client mode either. He said it was a software bug and
said he would file it with their software people.

In the meantime I returned my WAP and am now looking for a real bridge.
(too bad a bridge is a lot more expensive)

Regards,
Donald

Anyone have a follow-up to this? I also today bought a WAP54G and tried
to put it in WEP client mode. I'd select WEP on the main setup page,
hit save settings, and the page would redraw with WEP disabled.
Checking the status page, WEP was disabled.

Someone suggested that the WEP key should be asked for on the mode page
when the client mode is selected. The AP did not request this from me.
Also, at one point I was unable to change the channel. I'd set it to
channel 1 and it would come back on 6. I finally hit the reset button
on the back of the unit and started over. Got it back to channel 1, but
still cannot get WEP to go.

So, is this an unfixed bug in the WAP54G? If so, I'll return it and get
something else. What do group members suggest as a client? In this
particular case, I'd like to just plug something in to the ethernet
connector on the computer with a crossover cable.

THANKS!

Harold

Taking a moment's reflection, (E-Mail Removed) mused:

On the Setup >> Basic Setup page, you should have a toggle at the bottom
to Enable or Disable Security ... next to that you'll have a button for Edit
Security Settings. Click on this, and set the type of Encryption you want
(WPA is better than WEP), and also enter your passphrase. Then click Save
Settings. Once done, you are back at Basic Setup. Enable Security, and
click Save settings again ... Bob's your uncle.

Thanks for the quick response! Doing this, the enabled WEP comes back
disabled. I keep selecting it and it keeps coming back disabled, just
as described in Donald's post of Aug 15 2004, 7:43 pm.

Did you actually click to button and get the pop-up where you select
your security settings and give it a WEP Key?

There is a bug in the web interface that'll show "wireless security" as
"disabled" on the status page, but if you've set the encryption keys on
both the WAP and the wireless client and you have connectivity, then the
encryption is working.

On the main page select enable security, then click Edit Security
Settings (not save)
on that page enter the wep info and click save, it should now say
enabled when you
return to the main page. The status page may say its disabled, mine
did (for a while)
then finally started saying enabled. Might help to mention I am
running v2.06 firmware.
yours could be different.

OK, it's kinda working now. I had to turn on SSID broadcast then use
Internet Exploder to set it to client mode. I was then able to do a
site survey and set the WEP key there. I then went back and turned off
the SSID broadcast. The main config page still says WEP is disabled,
but the status page shows WEP is enabled, and the unit works pretty
much.

At this point, it seems to work for a while, then quit. I cycled the
power about 6:30 this morning. It's now a little after 9:00am and the
link has failed. I'm not at home right now so I can't chase it down any
further, but I'm unable to access that machine through Samba through my
linux machine (which I reach by ssh from here at work).

So, have those using the WAP54G in client mode with 128 bit WEP found
it to be reliable?

THANKS!

Harold
