Hi

My daughter is connected via wireless to this router. She does not have
access to the actual router (in a locked room).

Although she has internet access or a few days she now cannot connect
to the internet.

She has admin access to the router. I have got her to do a 'repair'
wirless connection on her computer and a hard reset on the router (via
Administration / reboot)/

Still no internet.

Status / DSL connection reports:

DSL Status = up
Downstream rate = 0kpps
Upstream rate = 0kbps

Should these be showing higher than zero?

When she opens her MSN page she gets:
IP ok
Default gateway OK
IE's ok
Host file OK
DNS !
Proxy server OK
Key Ports !
Wireless !

Failed to connect to this service. This could be due to improper proxy
or firewall problems. Please review your proxy and firewall settings.

Any help would be appreciated.

ColinK

PS I am placing another post to get advice about remote administration
access.

Does she own the router? If so, why is she denied physical access? If not,
why does she have admin rights?

Following a reboot, there will be a time delay before wireless access will
work. Similarly, there will be a delay while the router establishes an
internet connection. The report you show suggests that the ADSL connection
has been established (i.e. the router uses the phone line to connect to the
ADSL service at the local exchange) but that the service has not yet been
authenticated, so it can't carry any traffic. One reason for the failure to
authenticate may be incorrect username/password.

The router may create a log file that records the steps in the connection
procedure, so you could determine whether it is the authentication thathas
failed. Some routers are better than others in giving useful diagnostics.

From your more recent post it would seem that there was simply an inordinate
delay in authentication.

Ah!!

Perhaps she is doing something nafarious ??????

No -

simple answer.

The router is locked in the room upstairs. The owner is away. The owner
has given my daughter username and passsword detiails and permission to
administer router.

Simple. - yes ??

ColinK

PS - Internet connection has ceased again. Still trying to resolve.
Anyone familiar with this modem who could help my remote diagnosis
would be appreciated.

OK so we understand your position.

As previously explained at great length, you can only manage the router
remotely if you get your daughter to configure it to allow remote
management. Then you can only manage it when it has an active connection to
the internet.

When it has an active internet connection it is unlikely to be able to tell
you why it fails. You could set up a syslog server, but I don't know
whether the router outputs useful syslog information. The line attenuation
and SNR may give you a clue. However, fixing the problem will require
physical access to the router, and hours on the phone to the ISP; as well as
the possibility of having to replace the router because it is intermittently
faulty.

When does the owner get back?

Can your daughter have her own phone line installed and connect her own
router, in a location over which she has control?

Hi Graham

Thanks for your help. She has her own phone line, but for the last
month BT wholselale has been reporting the new line does not support
broadband.

I have spent 20 hours on the phone an email to BT. Bt wholesale won't
talk to me and will rarely talk to faults. Faults think it is a bt
retail problem. And BT wholesale say they will only talk to an ISP to
get BT wholesale's site to report the problem.

Until today I could not sign up with an ISP (except BT retail) because
of BT wholesale wrong info.

Catch 22.

BT wholesale is now reporting correctly. I have ordered Orange
Broadband (because it is free) and await modem and provisioning on 6
Nov.

In the mean time I still want temporary access to the internet via
Linksys.

Owner is back tomorrow (possibly), but I will also have to talk her
through settings (same as my daughter), only benefit is she can report
lights on / off/ flashing / red and can do reset if necessary.

My daughter has logged on and done hard re-boot. Status page reports
DSL = up, up and downstream report 0kb.

I am not familiar enought with routers to know what to look for in
modem to further diagnose problem.

Again any advice would be appreciated.

This suggests failure to authenticate with ISP. I have seen Pipex Homecall
suffer DNS failures recently - that might show similar symptoms

If you want it to work, ditch Orange (per copious advice on this ng) and get
Zen instead. They will actually help you through fixing faults. You will
then get a static IP address. They also offer a managed service - for a
price.

Buy a quality router (Vigor) and learn how to set it up, then send it -
ready configured to allow remote management - to your daughter.

When the dropout occurs, have your daughter check the following:

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

and see if the Wireless Network icon reports a disconnection.

If it does, do the following:

Right click the Wireless Network connection, click Disable.

When it reports the disable, right click again and click Enable.

The purpose of this rigmarole is to resynch the encryption keys
between the router and her computer. HTH
