Linksys WAG354G Internet problems.

Hi,

I seem to be experiencing some problems with my router (I think) or failing
that my ISP.

I have an always on 1mb broadband connection through Bulldog every so often
normally whilst using P2P software (or sometimes just normal internet use) I
find that I am unable to surf or collect my emails however my P2P software
is still connected and is happily downloading / uploading information.

I have tried turning off both my Norton Internet Security and also the
Linksys firewall but that doesn't seem to make any difference the only way
round it is to disconnect and reconnect the broadband connection through the
router options page.

Does anyone have any ideas on this one??

That usually takes over a connectiuon and kills the internet
connection to all other programs and machines.

Hmm - ok - I have been using P2P for years and have not had this problem
before, also I have the setting for the bandwith set to "hopefully" prevent
the P2P software from doing that - and it is not always whilst using P2P
software as I don't always have that running , I can be normally surfing and
then the next minute the connection dies.

I have that on mine, but it doesn't make the blindest bit of
difference at all.

Sure it's not running in the back ground?

Could also be your ISP, either purposefulkly or not, or a BT issue, or
a local network contention issue.

Sounds like it's a DNS issue. Presumably you can get an MS-DOS window and
the following (if it is DNS) might be found:

a) you cannot "ping www.bbc.co.uk"

b) you *can* "ping 212.58.224.83"

Your file sharing can continue, because the IP addresses are already known,
and not needing to be looked up, but when you enter web addresses, they're
not being found at all. BICBW, of course :-) Peter M.

Thanks - do you think it is likely to be ISP related?

Mo - it's your just desserts because you are top-posting ;-)

If your Linksys router is like mine, try setting QoS to
give HTML high priority and P2P ports lower priority.

That way, when you are actively surfing _you_ will get
priority and P2P will soak up the surplus, at other
times P2P will get all the bandwidth.

I have a nasty feeling it is nothing to do with my P2P software.

I have today got home from work and found that it has happened again - I had
no P2P software running - not even in the background.

My router is set to always on and I couldn't connect - the router showed
everything was "allegedly" ok i.e no flashing sync light.

Re Peter M's post I tried to ping www.bbc.co.uk and I couldn't so I am
beginning to think that it my ISP - I have had problems with them before,
does anyone know if changing the MTU rate would make any difference?

Ps apologies if I am not showing the correct netiquette in respect of top
posting etc I don't use news groups very often.

try "tcp optimizer" - this could be an MTU issue.
run that, and optimise all network connections for ppoe, reboot, and
see if it helps - fixed all my flaky web issues.
